This update is pretty major, and I’ve added some features I had been hoping to get in for awhile, plus addressed some issues that people have been having in previous releases.
The most major change is the addition of a jQuery plugin on the client side. TableGear has grown quite a bit since its inception, and at this point more work has probably gone into the server side to allow customization over data and formatting before the table is shown as well as after it has been updated. As a result I am taking the emphasis off TableGear as a MooTools plugin, and now envision it as a piece of server software with multiple points of entry on the client. jQuery is the most used framework currently, so it seemed like a logical place to start.
Although not as exciting, the best change for TableGear in this release is probably the initial template included in releases. I’ve made the options hash much easier to use and understand. The most basic required information about the database is left in uncommented, but nearly every other option available is now inside the template itself, commented out. In addition there are comments about how to use the options and what they are for, so that you don’t have to constantly refer to the documentation when getting started.
Another big change is composite primary key support. You can now have multiple primary keys rather than just one. This took a while to get right, but I’ve tested it out in a few different situations, and it seems solid. Custom queries were previously only useful for display and had trouble saving data back to the database. I’ve now fixed this and they should work properly. From the feedback I received this is apparently a widely used feature.
There are also a few changes in the way the auto-incremented primary key field is handled. Previous versions of TableGear simply assumed this field to be hidden in the table. Now the field is visible by default, but a “primary_key” class name exists on the column to make it easy to hide. Additionally, the auto-incremented value now reports back to the table on row insert so that the value is updated inline.
Transformed data can also now be returned from the server on update. Previously it would only appear in the initial table load. This means, for example, if you have a field in the database for image URLs and you apply a data transform to display them as images (as opposed to displaying the URL as text), you can now update the URL in the table and the new image will load inline. Previously, once updated the URL would only appear as text.
Finally, when using the “increment” parameter for select elements, “range” now refers to the total number of option elements. Previously it referred to the numerical range that the options would traverse. So, for example, let’s say you wanted 10 option elements in a select that incremented in steps of 100 (400, 500, 600, etc.). Previously the “range” value would be 1000 (100 increment * 10 steps). Now it is simply 10. This should be simpler, but if you’re upgrading from a previous version watch out for this value. In the last example you would wind up with 1000 option elements. If you’re seeing memory overflow errors it probably means you need to change this value.
Other small changes include:
- database[“columns”] option now changed to database[“fields”].
- database[“database”] option now changed to database[“name”].
- database[“host”] option now allowed in addition to database[“server”].
- All fields are now sortable by default.
- All fields except auto-incrementent are now editable by default.
In addition to changes in the codebase, I have also put the entire project up on Github and made it public. Now that there are 2 clients for two different versions of TableGear, the project includes scripts to build the releases as well.
Also, I have started both a UserVoice page and a Google Groups group for support. I’m envisioning the UserVoice page to handle bugs and feature requests which can be voted on, and the Google Groups page will let users give each other support. Also I removed the Mooforum link as the software is no longer MooTools specific.
That should be all the changes for now. Enjoy this new release, and please use the UserVoice page if there are any new concerns, etc.

Now, this is strange. My fix to your fix is to get rid of your fix, lol. That was my issue and now both TableGear 1.6.1 and jquery 1.8.5 are working. I increased the version number and subtracted the following code.
